Jeep Reverses Course, Brings Back Automatic Transmission for Wranglers
In a notable reversal, Jeep announced it is bringing back the eight-speed automatic transmission option for the 2025 Wrangler equipped with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The move comes just months after the company initially discontinued the automatic for that particular powertrain combination, leaving only a six-speed manual choice for V-6 buyers.
According to Jeep officials, this decision was prompted by enthusiastic feedback from the brand’s loyal community. “In response to enthusiastic requests, we’re reintroducing the eight-speed automatic transmission for V-6 Wrangler models,” said Bob Broderdorf, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. He added that the adjustment “underscores our commitment to freedom of choice, performance, and versatility for every adventure.”
Consumers may prefer the automatic transmission for a variety of reasons. Automatic gearboxes can ease the stress of navigating stop-and-go traffic, free drivers from the coordination required by a manual clutch, and allow for simplify off-road driving when crawling over obstacles. These advantages appeal to both everyday commuters and dedicated off-road enthusiasts who appreciate having one less variable to manage behind the wheel.
Despite the return of the automatic option, prospective buyers will need to factor in a higher price tag. The eight-speed automatic will cost an additional $4,500—significantly more than expected before its brief discontinuation. Still, for those seeking the convenience of an automatic while enjoying the power and versatility of the V-6 Wrangler, the reinstated option is now available for order.
