The Knots That Keep Gear on the Roof

One time in West Virginia I was driving down the highway with kayaks on the roof of my car. Traffic came to a sudden stop, and so did we...and one kayak did not. It shot off the front of the car and went bouncing down the road ahead of us.

Nobody plans that moment. What it taught me is that packing gear onto a vehicle is a skill with two halves: rigging the load correctly, and knowing which knot to use where. The straps and the rope do nothing on their own. Cam straps over the hull do the main work of holding a boat down, but the bow and stern lines, the tarp over the firewood, the guyline on the awning, and the spare rope that fixes whatever breaks at camp all depend on a handful of knots, and the handful is smaller than most people think. Seven cover just about everything rope does when you are in the backcountry. One job, covered at the end, should never involve a knot at all.

Trucker's hitch

If the kayak on that West Virginia highway had a patron knot, this is it. The trucker's hitch is how a plain rope becomes a tensioning system: a loop in the middle of the line acts as a pulley, and hauling the working end through it gives roughly three-to-one purchase, enough to cinch a bow line down until the hull squeaks. It is the knot for bow and stern lines, for rope tie-downs when the ratchet straps run out, and for anything that has to stay tight at 70 miles an hour.

To tie it:

  1. Tie off one end to the rack or bumper and throw the line over the load.
  2. Partway down the free side, form a loop in the standing line (a slipped loop works; the alpine butterfly below takes the same load without jamming).
  3. Run the working end under the anchor point, back up through the loop, and haul down.
  4. Lock the tension with two half hitches around the doubled line.

The half hitches at the end are the step people skip, and they are the difference between a system that holds and one that creeps loose over fifty miles of washboard. Check it at the first fuel stop; rope stretches and loads settle in the first hour of driving.

Bowline

The bowline puts a fixed loop in the end of a rope, and its talent is coming untied when you want it to. Load it all day, drag a log with it, hang a food bag off it, and it still breaks open with one push of a thumb. That is what separates it from the knot most people improvise in its place, which welds itself shut under load. Use it any time a rope needs a loop that will not slip smaller, which on a trip usually means the anchor end of a tie-down or a tarp corner.

The old mnemonic still works: the rabbit comes up out of the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole. Dress it snug before loading it, and leave a tail longer than feels necessary. A bowline with a stub tail can shake loose on a flapping line.

Round turn and two half hitches

For tying a rope off to a rack bar, a tree, or a shackle mount, the round turn and two half hitches is the workhorse. Where the bowline makes a loop to drop over something, this one ties directly to the thing. The full wrap around the anchor takes the load and takes the friction, so the half hitches only have to hold what little tension is left; that is why it can be tied and untied while the line is still loaded, which matters when a tarp is fighting you in wind.

Taut-line hitch

Awnings and tarps go slack; the taut-line hitch is the fix that does not involve retying anything. It is a friction hitch tied around the line's own standing part, which turns the loop into a slider: grip the knot, slide it to tension the guyline, and it stays where you put it. Scouts learn it for tent lines and nothing about it changes on a 270-degree awning in a gravel pullout. Its close cousin the rolling hitch does the same trick gripping a pole or another rope, and holds a pull along it without sliding.

Clove hitch

Two crossed turns around a bar and the clove hitch is done, which makes it the fastest way to start a lashing or fix a line to a rail for a moment. The speed has a cost: it slips under a load that pulls along the bar and it can work loose when the pull cycles, so treat it as temporary, fine for the first wrap of a firewood lashing and wrong as the only knot between a boat and the highway. When a clove hitch needs to become permanent, back it up with a half hitch or start over with the round turn.

Sheet bend

Sooner or later two ropes need to become one longer rope, usually because the tarp ridgeline came up short. The sheet bend joins two lines cleanly, and unlike the square knot people reach for, it holds when the ropes are different thicknesses; the photo shows exactly that pairing. Form a bight in the thicker rope, run the thinner one up through it, around behind both strands, and back under itself. Both tails should end up on the same side of the knot. If they sit on opposite sides you have tied the weaker left-handed version, and it is worth the ten seconds to retie.

Alpine butterfly

The alpine butterfly puts a loop in the middle of a rope without needing either end, and it unties after loading like the bowline does. That makes it the clean answer for a mid-line clip point, the pulley loop of a trucker's hitch that gets used trip after trip, or a three-point tie-down across an awkward load. Tied around a damaged section, it also isolates a worn spot so the rope can keep working until you replace it. To tie one, wrap the line twice around your hand, walk the inner wrap over the others, and pull the middle through.

The job that never gets a knot

Vehicle recovery is rope work, and it is the one place none of this applies. A kinetic strap or winch line under load stores enormous energy, and a knot is the worst thing you can add to that system. Every knot bends the rope tightly around itself, and that first tight bend is where fibers overload; pull-test data from rope and rigging makers consistently shows a knotted line failing well below its rated strength. On a tarp that means nothing. On a snatch strap moving a stuck truck, the same loss can put the breaking point below the forces a hard pull generates, with steel hardware on the ends of the line when it lets go.

So recovery gear is built to make knots unnecessary: sewn eyes, rated soft shackles, hard shackles, winch hooks and thimbles. Connect rated hardware to rated hardware, drape a damper over the line, and if two straps must be joined, join them with a rated soft shackle rather than any knot ever tied. A rope that arrives knotted at a recovery is a rope that should sit that one out.

Keeping them in your hands

I have always had a hard time remembering knots. Jokes too. The knots I am working on.

What has helped is cutting the list down to the seven above and keeping a six-foot hank of cord where I actually touch it, on the counter, in the console, next to the desk. Tie the trucker's hitch while the coffee brews and it stops being a diagram and becomes a thing your hands do. Somewhere out there the next sudden stop is already waiting for somebody's kayak. Ten minutes of practice a week is cheap insurance that this time it will not be mine.
