Bennett Pass Road, Forest Road 3550, runs along the ridge between Bennett Pass on OR 35 and Lookout Mountain near High Prairie. The 14-mile road was built in the early 1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps crews following an existing forest trail and was bypassed in the late 1980s by the modern gravel road to High Prairie. The original CCC alignment is still drivable in summer but unmaintained.

Mt. Hood National Forest's Hood River Ranger District manages the road. The route includes the Terrible Traverse, a steep one-lane shelf about 2.4 miles in from the Bennett Pass Sno-Park where passing is impossible. The road typically opens mid-June and closes with the first significant snow in October.

Getting there

Directions

From OR 35 (west entrance). Take OR 35 to the Bennett Pass Sno-Park, on the east side of the highway between Mount Hood Meadows and Hood River Meadows. Forest Road 3550 leaves the back of the lot and climbs immediately.

From Dufur / Hood River (east entrance). Take Forest Road 44 west from OR 35 (signed for Dufur) about 4 miles, turn south on Forest Road 4410, and follow it to High Prairie. FR 3550 continues west from the High Prairie area.

Getting Oriented

The road sits on Mount Hood's southeast shoulder. The west end starts at the Bennett Pass Sno-Park on OR 35 between Mount Hood Meadows and the Hood River Meadows ski area. The east end ties into the Lookout Mountain Road network at High Prairie, with connections out to Forest Road 44 and Dufur on the east side of the Cascades.

Trail Overview

Fourteen miles of primitive forest road, ridge-running. Surface ranges from rocky to washboarded gravel with stretches of dirt. Bonney Junction sits roughly halfway and connects south to Bonney Meadows Road for a longer loop. The Terrible Traverse is the technical crux: a one-lane catwalk cut into the side of a steep slope where two vehicles cannot pass and the down-slope shoulder is unforgiving. Walking it before driving is the standard practice for first-timers.

The road is generally only open mid-June through early October. Snow lingers in the higher meadows into July most years.

Dispersed camping is allowed on Mt. Hood National Forest land along the road, with the ridge segment between Camp Windy and High Prairie holding the most level ground. The nearest developed campgrounds are at Mount Hood Meadows on OR 35 and Forest Road 4410 has additional dispersed sites near High Prairie. Robinhood and Hood River Meadows campgrounds on OR 35 offer developed sites within a 15-minute drive of the west entrance.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • Walk the Terrible Traverse before driving. Vehicle width and operator nerve both matter; turn around at the parking pullout if it feels too tight.
  • Carry recovery gear. The road is unmaintained and a flat tire or stuck vehicle is on you to handle.
  • Confirm the road is snow-free before driving in early summer. Drifts linger on the higher segments into July most years.
  • Combine with the Lookout Mountain hike from High Prairie for a full day. The summit hike from the upper trailhead is about 3 miles round-trip with 600 feet of gain.
  • Take a partner vehicle if possible. There is no cell coverage and traffic is light.
